A pedestrian was seriously injured Monday when he attempted to run across all six lanes of Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach and was struck by a BMW, police said.

The victim was hit about 1:50 p.m. in the 1100 block of PCH, near Aviation Boulevard, according to Hermosa Beach police Officer Michael Frilot.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment of massive head trauma, internal bleeding and “moderate broken bones,” Frilot said.

According to witness accounts and evidence gathered at the scene, the victim was not in a crosswalk when he ran eastbound across PCH, Frilot said.

He stopped at the center median and the driver of a northbound vehicle stopped in the number one lane to let him cross, but as the victim continued across the road he was struck in the number two lane by a black 2006 BMW 325i, according to Frilot.

The driver of the BMW stopped at the scene as required and “is not suspected of any improper driving as verified by video and witness statements,” the officer said.

There are marked crosswalks on either end of that block of PCH, each about 100 yards from where the victim was struck, Frilot said.

The crash temporarily closed northbound PCH from Aviation Boulevard to the Hermosa Beach Pier, according to the California Highway Patrol.
